Job Description

Experimental physicist who has hands-on experience working with liquid lithium, liquid metals, or metal vapor sources (e.g. liquid lithium as a plasma-facing component, metal vapor atomic beam sources for atomic physics or Physical Vapor Deposition). The ideal candidate would have direct experience designing/building scientific hardware and an understanding of the material physics involved in liquid metal wetting on substrates and/or plasma/ion-surface interaction.

In this role, you will be instrumental in building our first technology demonstration project. You will be in charge of designing lithium vapor sources as well as working with lithium-coated plasma facing components and particle energy analyzers. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to achieve the company’s technical milestones.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the design, operation and troubleshooting of lithium atomic vapor sources.
• Design and test systems for distributing liquid lithium on the surface of in-vacuum components.
• Run tests to understand the importance of ion-surface interactions on lithium coated components.
• Operate and troubleshoot various particle analyzers such as time-of-flight mass spectrometers.
• Collaborate with a small multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to integrate above mentioned systems into the larger prototype device.
• Maintain a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
• Strong experimental background working with liquid lithium systems, metal vapor sources, or plasma-material interaction.
• Experience developing scientific hardware (e.g. a metal vapor source, or a diagnostic for a surface-science test stand)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with liquid lithium, lithium evaporators, or lithium-coated plasma-facing materials.

Pay: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
